Hermann Richard Pfretschner (1857 – 1921) learned the craft of bow making in Markneukirchen from Carl Richard Pfretschner, his father. In 1874 he worked one year in Paris for J.B. Vuillaume. This relatively short period of training was to influence not only his own career, but also the whole direction of German bow making. In 1880 he opened up his own shop in Markneukirchen, which he ran very successfully until he turned the shop over to his sons Hermann and Berthold in 1914.
